Special 2 - tank duel blow-by-blow - print version
| The following original pictures are public domain from archives NARA, BPR (Air Forces Group) and originate from various internet sources, pictures from the original movie by Bates and Rosenmann originate also from the version of the original movie on the DVD "1945 - Kriegsende in Köln" published by Hermann Rheindorf. | |||||
| |||||
| The movie taken by cameraman Bates (the entire sequence has a duration of about 1 minute) shows the shelling of the Panther, fleeing crew members and the burning Panther. Due to many blurred pictures and the very short duration of the movie parts showing the escaping crew (17 seconds) it's not easy to see all the details. It's hard to recognize and understand what happens in only a few seconds. On this website I show all relevant parts of the tank duel on 37 still frames. The pictures are small cutouts from the original film frames to show more details.
The film sequence of Bates starts, after the Panther was hit by a first shell from the Pershing only a few seconds ago. The debarking of the crew begins:

| |||||
![]() The first film scenes show soldier 1 coming out of the cupola hatch. The impact hole is recognizable left underneath the turret
|
The following animation of 2 film frames shows the object more clearly:
| |||||
| ![]() Soldier 1 is probably the Panther tank commander.
|
![]() The tank commander has some problems to leave the tank. |
|||
| |||||
| |||||
|
| |||||
| |||||
![]() In three frames one can see a falling object. It seems to be the German tank commander, who had rolled out of the turret. Here is one of the two blurred frames.
| ![]() Fig 5: And here the only one sharp frame showing the falling tank commander, one can see his legs, he is falling headfirst.
| ||||
|
After viewing the movie sequence hundreds of times I think there's an invisible cut in this movie sequence and Bates has removed one, two or three seconds of film within this sequence between Fig. 3 above and Fig. 5 above. Just between the situation where you can see the tank commander in the cupola and the soldier on the front deck appears. There are several indications let me believe there is an invisible cut in the movie.
Even if there's a cut of two or three seconds of real action I enumerate the seconds corresponding to the available film sequences in the following.
| |||||
| |||||
| |||||
![]() The tank commander falls down onto the Panther's front deck.
| ![]() Again the tank commander on the front deck.
| ||||
| |||||
![]() Soldier 1, the tank commander, on the front deck
| |||||
![]() The tank commander pushes himself around the turret
| |||||
| |||||
| ![]() The tank commander seems to jump down from the Panther's front deck.
|
![]() Bates is changing his position behind a window from left to right. One cannot see the Panther for a short time. |
|||
|
| |||||
| |||||
![]() During a filmsequence with blurred pictures one can see a projectile with tracer effect flying toward the Panther.
| ![]() One film frame later this projectile doesn't hit the Panther, flies over it.
| ||||
| |||||
![]() During a filmsequence with blurred pictures one can see a second projectile with tracer flying toward the Panther, here at the bottom of this picture.
| ![]() One film frame later again this projectile. Now one can see a soldier on the Panther's deck who climbs out of the radio operator's hatch. This is soldier 2 - probably the radio operator.
| ||||
The radio operator's hatch:![]()
| |||||
![]() And again one film frame later the projectile had hit the Panther, was reflected and now it flies in another direction while soldier 2 is sitting on the Panther's deck only a few centimeters to the right.
| ![]() Once again soldier 2.
| ||||
| |||||
![]() Soldier 2 wants to jump from the Panther. The tank commander is still in the process to stand up. In the cupola another soldier can be seen wrapped in smoke, soldier 3.
| ![]() Soldier 2 is falling down head over from the Panther, one can see the legs rising up. The tank commander is still in the process to stand up. One can see soldier 3 in the cupola better now.
| ||||
![]() Watching this two still frames one can see an object in the tank commander's right hand, is it the rifle or the "Sehstab" (observation periscope) he had hold in his hands in the turret already ?
| |||||
![]() The soldier in the cupola: the fire seems to burn his torso. Soldier 2 is now behind the Panther, one cannot see him. The tank commander starts to escape to the left side. On the Panther's deck soldier 4 (arrow) appears out of one of the hatches - it seems to be the driver since he is climbing out of the driver's hatch.
| |||||
![]() The soldier in the cupola. 4 still frames out of a film sequence of several seconds
| |||||
| |||||
![]()
| |||||
| |||||
![]() At the bottom of the picture the next shell appears (No. 2). Soldier 4 is still climbing out of the driver's hatch, soldier 2 still lies behind the Panther and soldier 1, the tank commander, still runs to the left side, at this moment covered by soldier 4 climbing out of the hatch. The head and left arm of the tank commander are visible behind soldier 4. This concrete situation is interpreted falsely in many movie descriptions where they say the one soldier runs back in order to help the other soldier.
|
![]() The shell shortly before the impact. Soldier 4 still stepping out of the hatch. Soldier 1, the tank commander, continues fleeing to the left. One can see his head, torso and its left arm. This picture shows that the tank commander is only running away and does not plan to help the other soldiers. He is located already some meters behind the Panther on the ground (only cameraman Bates high point of view let him appear next to soldier 4) and soldier 4 is still located on the Panther's deck.
| ||||
![]() The shell hits, the soldier in the cupola is still recognizable as a shade.
| |||||
![]() Excerpt from Fig. 21. Tank commander running to the left, soldier 4 still located on the tank.
| |||||
|
| |||||
| |||||
![]() After the blurred picture sequence one can see soldier 4 in preparation to jump from the Panther. The tank commander now is out of sight.
| ![]() Soldier 4 shortly before the jump. Soldier 2 still located behind the Panther, one cannot see him. Soldier 3 in the cupola disappeared.
| ||||
| |||||
![]() Soldier 4 jumps from the Panther.
| ![]() While he jumps another soldier behind the Panther stands up, it seems this is soldier 2 who was jumping from the Panther some seconds before.
| ||||
![]() Soldier 4 (left) and soldier 2 (right) next to each other.
| ![]() Soldier 4 now is located behind the Panther. Soldier 2 continues to straighten up.
| ||||
| |||||
![]() Soldier 2 runs away. Soldier 4 just starts running behind him.
| |||||
| |||||
|
| |||||
| |||||
![]() The following pictures are only very blurred. One nevertheless can recognize soldier 4 on two frames. He flees to the rear. Soldier 2 is already out of sight at this time.
| ![]() One can see soldier 4 only as a locally changing shade.
| ||||
| |||||
![]() An some frames later there's a dark shadow moving next to the cupola. It's another soldier running away, soldier 5. It's probably the loader (following the theory above that soldier 3 was the gunner) who was climbing out of the loader's hatch and now runs toward the cathedral.
| |||||
| |||||
![]() Some seconds later the third shell is on the way.
| ![]() A hit. The impact hole is recognizable as small bright point.
| ||||
![]() Shortly after the impact of the third shell.
| ![]() The Panther is burning. | ||||
| |||||
|
Now following about 30 seconds scenes of the burning Panther.
| |||||
| In the 16 seconds short movie sequence 4 soldiers - tank commander, driver, radio operator and probably the loader - can be observed debarking successfull from the tank. The soldier in the turret in the midst of the flames (fig. 16 and following pictures) probably could not leave the Panther and died. The second hit sure had severed his legs. He looks already more dead than alive on this pictures before the hit. Three Panther crew members were found later in the close military hospital of the cathedral shelter, one of them died later.
| |||||
| Inside the tank Several pictures show the interior of a Panther, one can see how straitened it was for the tank crews. | |

| Only a fake ? |
| In early 2008 the German journalist Hermann Rheindorf had published a DVD in Germany with title "Köln 1945 Nahaufnahmen" - translated: "Cologne 1945 close up" - about the last war days in Cologne in March 1945. In this documentation he says the tank duel was only a fake, a propaganda show to promote the new Pershing tank. He presented several proofs for his opinion. I have checked Rheindorf's proofs and arguments and after all I'm sure they are wrong. I have published an extensive inquiry in German on my webpages and there I check and refute each of Rheindorf's proofs and arguments. Since there's no English DVD version available I do not publish this webpages in English. You will find this webpages here. In case you are interested you can use two online translation tools which are included there to translate the text to your favourite language. |
